Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama declines to speak to media after Game 5 loss to Thunder
Victor Wembanyama has competed with the heart of a champion for much of the 2026 NBA playoffs, but in the biggest game of his young NBA career, the San Antonio Spurs big man struggled immensely. He looked extremely uncomfortable offensively and failed to make his presence known on the glass. An unpleasant media session presumably awaited him following Tuesday’s 127-114 road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
But Wembanyama chose not to speak publicly. Instead of answering questions about his rough performance, the All-NBA First-Team selection and Defensive Player of the Year exited the Paycom Center, per The Athletic’s Sam Amick. Many people will chastise him for not attending the press conference, while some Spurs fans will applaud him for moving on to a must-win Game 6.
Despite his underwhelming showing, few will challenge Wembanyama’s drive to win a championship. The Thunder expertly forced him out to the perimeter and brought stifling pressure when he did try to make a play in the paint area. Head coach Mark Daigneault and the Oklahoma City frontcourt deserve a huge amount of credit for limiting the 22-year-old to 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting (0-of-5 from 3-point range) and six rebounds.
Simply put, Wembanyama was unable to overcome OKC’s physicality on this night. The superstar center has already earned the benefit of the doubt, so fans will anticipate a huge response in San Antonio. But it is hard to just brush off this media snub.
This is now the second time in the 2026 NBA playoffs that Victor Wembanyama has refrained from addressing negative optics. The French juggernaut did not directly comment on his ejection from Game 4 of the conference semifinals, which came after he elbowed Naz Reid in the neck, and he is staying silent in the aftermath of this high-profile stumble.
Hopefully, Wembanyama will learn from this adversity and figure out how to push through the discomfort.
