Spurs-Thunder WCF Game 1 makes NBA history not seen since 1976

The San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder kept the fans on the edge of their seats with their nail-biting encounter in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals at Paycom Center on Monday.

When the smoke cleared, the Spurs escaped with the win in double overtime, 122-115, to steal home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series.

San Antonio and Oklahoma City exchanged haymakers in crunch time. The defending champions sent the game into overtime after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made a layup and Chet Holmgren blocked Victor Wembanyama’s attempt.

Wembanyama forced a second extension after nonchalantly burying a deep three-pointer.

According to NBA reporter Keerthika Uthayakumar, it was the first time since 1976 that a game in the Western Conference Finals went into double overtime.

Fifty years ago, the Phoenix Suns beat the Golden Warriors in Game 4, 133-129. Phil Smith had 37 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to lead the Suns, while Rick Barry added 26 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Wembanyama, who gave a wise answer to a reporter’s question after the game, recorded a double-double of 41 points and 23 rebounds to carry the Spurs. He added three assists and three blocks and shot 14-of-25 from the field. He scored nine points in the second overtime.

Dylan Harper was also terrific with 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals, filling in anew for De’Aaron Fox, who was still out with an ankle injury.

If Game 1 was any indication, the Spurs and the Thunder will continue to keep the fans glued and experiencing mini-panic attacks.
