Spurs’ Stephon Castle reveals ‘right message’ Victor Wembanyama sent during Game 3
After two games in the NBA Finals, many were ready to count the San Antonio Spurs out of the series. It’s easy to see why observers said that: it seemed like the New York Knicks were the perfect counter to the young, up-and-coming team. However, in one of the most hostile environments in the league, San Antonio refused to be swept, winning Game 3 despite a ton of adversity from the home crowd.
Guard Stephon Castle had his best game of the Finals, getting 23 points on efficient shooting along with five rebounds and five assists. After the game, Castle credited Victor Wembanyama, who he says has been a vocal leader for the Spurs by sending the “right message” to his teammates before the games.
"He always sends the right message."

“Vic’s obviously pretty young too, but (he’s a) great vocal leader, you know, great person to be around on and off the court,” Castle said. “So, you know, he always sends the right message, even when he has a good game or a bad game. You know, I feel like he always sends the right message throughout the team. And I mean, we run off that engine and, you know, we’ve gotten this far, and we’re not trying to stop right now.”
Wembanyama and Castle have been the heart of the Spurs’ run this postseason. It’s no surprise, then, that when the two players have a great game, San Antonio was able to power through for a win. Wembanyama had an all-around performance, getting 31 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks to keep the series from becoming a sweep. San Antonio fended off a late run by the Knicks to come away with the victory.
Game 4 of the series will be played in Madison Square Garden again. The Spurs are looking to take two games of their own to not make their return to San Antonio a do-or-die affair. Only five teams has come back from a 0-2 deficit in the NBA Finals, and no one has recovered from two straight losses on the road. Can San Antonio buck this trend?
