Spurs star Victor Wembanyama pays homage to Gregg Popovich after win vs. Timberwolves
The San Antonio Spurs overwhelmed the Minnesota Timberwolves 133-95 in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, handing Minnesota its worst playoff loss in franchise history and leveling the series at 1-1 after a 104-102 defeat in Game 1.
Victor Wembanyama finished with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting (46.7%), including 2-of-7 from three (28.6%) and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. He also pulled down 15 rebounds, handed out 2 assists, recorded a steal and 2 blocks, and logged a +12 rating in 25:54.
Following the win, Wembanyama paid tribute to franchise legend Gregg Popovich, who now serves as president of basketball operations after stepping down as head coach.
Referencing Popovich’s philosophy, Wembanyama said on the team’s approach for Game 3:
“We’re going to watch film because, as Pop says, when you win you’re never as good as you thought you were, and when you lose you’re rarely as bad. So obviously, stay humble and keep working.”

San Antonio, led by Wembanyama’s interior presence, built a 24-point halftime lead and stretched their advantage to as many as 47 points. The Spurs’ defensive pressure defined the game, holding the Timberwolves to 29.8% shooting in the first half and just 13.3% from three-point range. Minnesota were limited to 35 first-half points, their lowest scoring half of the season as shown in the broadcast, and committed 22 turnovers while being outscored 29-5 in fast break points. San Antonio also owned the interior, racking up 34 points in the paint before halftime.
Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 21 points, while De’Aaron Fox scored 16 points. Fox and Wembanyama, who had combined for just 21 points in Game 1, combined for 28 first-half points in Game 2 as San Antonio shot 50% from the field and 41% from three-point range overall.
The Spurs also benefited from a team-wide scoring response, with seven players reaching double figures and strong bench contributions, including rookie Dylan Harper’s 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.
Next, Game 3 and Game 4 are scheduled for Friday and Sunday in Minneapolis.
