Spurs rumors: New hint fuels Kawhi Leonard-Victor Wembanyama duo dream

After falling short in the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs are looking to answer some important questions about their roster. While they are very much ahead of their rebuild schedule, the playoffs have also exposed some uncomfortable truths. Many are looking at what San Antonio will look to do this offseason to build upon their Finals run.

Perhaps one of these moves will involve a familiar, if not a bit unwelcome face. One of the hotter names in the trade market this offseason is former Spurs star forward Kawhi Leonard. Rumors abound about the Los Angeles Clippers trading the All-Star forward. During the NBA Draft, Bobby Marks hinted that playoff teams are looking to trade for Leonard, with his “former teams” one of those teams.

Leonard has only played with two other teams prior to his Clippers stint: the Spurs and the Toronto Raptors. It’s also worth noting that the Raptors are reportedly getting active in the trade market. Just recently, Toronto was reported as one of the teams interested in LaMelo Ball. How this affects their hypothetical interest in Leonard remains to be seen, but the Spurs will have stiff competition in the trade market.

Leonard was drafted by San Antonio during the 2011 NBA Draft with the 15th pick. The rangy forward was one of the biggest success stories of the storied franchise. In just his third year, Leonard won Finals MVP after the Spurs forward’s stellar defensive stand against LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Leonard would eventually develop into an MVP-caliber player, but his career would take a drastic turn after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2017 playoffs.

Leonard’s time with the Spurs came to a bitter end after a disagreement with the team’s medical staff regarding his injury. He would eventually be traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2019, where he won his second championship and Finals MVP. He would sign with the Clippers in the following offseason.

A return to the Spurs would be a fascinating development for Leonard. He would join a core that went all the way to the NBA Finals, though that unit will likely be broken up if a trade does materialize. How will the San Antonio crowd react to this development?
