Spurs’ Mitch Johnson reveals key to a Game 3 NBA Finals win vs. Knicks
The San Antonio Spurs are in legitimate trouble. Heading into the 2026 NBA Finals as the favorite to win it all after dethroning the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs now find themselves down 2-0 against the New York Knicks after they failed to complete the comeback on Friday night in Game 2, taking a 105-104 loss.
No team with homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals has ever come back from losing the first two games of the series at home, which means that the Spurs need to pull off a miracle just to rescue their chances of winning a title.
For head coach Mitch Johnson, the key for the Spurs is to just stick to their game plan. He doesn’t believe that San Antonio has done a good enough job of executing what they want to do through the first two games, and it has cost them dearly.
“We don’t feel like we played well or up to our standard, at least, in the last two games. New York has played very well, and they’re a part of that. But we’re going to go into Game 3, if we play our brand of basketball up to our standard, we’ll be just fine,” Johnson said in his postgame presser, via Spurs Nation on X (formerly Twitter).

The Spurs have not taken care of the little things, and that has been the difference through the first two games of the 2026 NBA Finals. They have lost the turnover battle, leading to runouts and easy buckets for the Knicks, and it was ever so apparent in the fourth how they lost the war on the offensive glass.
It didn’t help that Wembanyama was very much off-kilter for the first half of Game 1, and the Spurs, yet again, relinquished a double-digit lead in the first half. But the Spurs know that their season will basically be on the line when they take the court for Game 3 on Monday night, and they will need to play spotless basketball to avoid staring down an inescapable hole.
