Spurs’ GM makes brutally honest admission about Jayden Quaintance pick despite knee red flags

Amid uncertainty about the pick, there appear to be two certainties regarding Jayden Quaintance going to the San Antonio Spurs with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the NBA Draft.

One is that he would’ve been a top ten pick had he not suffered a serious knee injury. The other is that a torn ACL and meniscus make the selection somewhat risky.

To a certain extent, Spurs General Manager Brian Wright agrees.

“I think you rely on people much smarter than you that understand things medically and how we can help and what is actually going on,” Wright said.

“So, there’s a lot of analysis, there’s a lot of trust in that, in working with his representatives. And we believe that he’s someone that will have a long career and we can help him get there.”

Wright wouldn’t have to acknowledge such realities had Quaintance not undergone major surgery in March of 2025, which limited him to less than a handful of games last season.

The book on Jayden Quaintance

At 6-10, 255 pounds, the former Kentucky Wildcat appeared in 28 collegiate games across stops in Lexington and Arizona State. Last season, he averaged 8.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks while shooting 53 percent from the field.

As a freshman with the Sun Devils in 2024-25, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 24 games (all starts), earning Big 12 All-Freshman Team and Big 12 All-Defensive Team honors.

He set the school’s freshman record with 63 blocked shots and led all freshmen nationally in rejections per game. Last season, Quaintance’s sophomore year was limited to four games at Kentucky while recovering from the aforementioned knee injury.

“He’s just scratching the surface as to, as to what he could be. Had he not been hurt, he probably isn’t sitting there if he played a full season and did some of the things we saw him do while at Arizona State – and you’ve got to remember, he was the youngest player in college basketball at one point,” Wright said.

From Cleveland, Ohio, Quaintance was named a 2023-24 McDonald’s All-American. He represented USA Basketball as a member of the 2023 Men’s U16 National Team at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, helping Team USA capture a gold medal.

It’s the kind of upside on which Wright is focused, especially with how much the 6-9 big man impressed in limited time collegiately.

“To come in and compete, college basketball has gotten a lot older with NIL and guys staying in school longer. So, when you see a 17, 18-year-old coming in and competing with guys that are 22, 23, 24 in some cases, and not only holding his own, but bringing physicality, bringing force, being able to play at that level, it’s really, really impressive,” the Spurs general manager added.

Shortly after the Spurs drafted him, Quaintance revealed he may have another procedure on his knee this offseason as he deals with discomfort. Wright acknowledges the possibility, while also acknowledging what could lie ahead for his team.

“We think as we continue to build this out – and, obviously, we’ll be patient and deliberate with him – we think there’s a lot of room for him to continue to grow.”
