Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox rejects Dylan Harper’s ‘Unc’ label in hilarious message
As San Antonio Spurs super rookie Dylan Harper answered questions during NBA Finals Media Day, teammate De’Aaron Fox waited behind the side curtain set to take the podium once his 20-year-old teammate was done.
As Harper caught a glance of his older back-court mate, it was almost as if he couldn’t help himself.
“Hey Unc,” the former Rutgers star exclaimed.
Though only 28 years old, Fox has become the “old man” of a starting group that features 22-year-old Victor Wembanyama, 21-year-old Stephon Castle, 25-year-old Devin Vassell, and 24-year-old Julian Champagnie. Including key reserves, Sixth Man of the Year, Keldon Johnson, is 26, while Carter Bryant, like Harper, is 20.
Harrison Barnes, at 34 years old, and Luke Kornet, who’s 30, are the only rotational players older than Fox, who has said previously that he is not an “Unc,” no matter Harper’s charges.
With that, ClutchPoints jokingly asked the two-time All-Star if Harper would face any repercussions for failing to obey the wishes of an elder.
“Punishment? What the f**k!” Fox responded.
“Well, I’m actually a literal uncle, but I’m not an ‘Unc’ in the sense of I’m old. I’m definitely not,” the Spurs second leading scorer during the regular season continued.
"Don't change anything that we're doing. There's a reason we're in the Finals. There's a reason we won 60 games…didn't lose three games in a row the whole year"

The Spurs are the second youngest team to reach the NBA Finals dating all the way back to the 1977 Portland Trail Blazers. It’s the reason a 28-year-old among them is consider an elder statesman.
After one year at Kentucky, Fox’s rookie year in the NBA came during the 2017-2018 season. By his sixth campaign, the Sacramento Kings made the playoffs for the first time in almost two decades. Though Sacramento lost in that first round, Fox stood out, averaging essentially 27 and a half points per contest in a seven-game series against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. The Kings qualified for the Play-In the next year, but didn’t advance beyond that qualifying stage.
“I feel like growing up in my era, at least, Fox was kind of a big name,” Harper said. “Just watching high school and college highlights and watching him in the league.”
Despite their age difference, both are new to the Spurs. Fox joined the club via last season’s February trade deadline and, even at that, he only played in 17 games with San Antonio as the organization shut him down because of a lingering hand injury.
“Just to be a part of this journey with him and to have him – he hates when I say this, but as my uncle, in a sense, my big brother – just to have him kind of to help guide me because this is year nine for him,” Harper continued. “This is my first year, so he’s done a great job of mentoring me.”
The Spurs’ second-leading scorer in the regular season since arriving, Fox is third on that list in these playoffs, though he’s battled a sprained ankle, and his control of the offense has been evident throughout this run.
“I feel like what he brings to the table, every team would love to have, and I feel like I’m just lucky to play with him.”
A first trip to the NBA Finals has Fox feeling the same way about Harper and his young teammates.
