Sparks re-sign locker room favorite to camp contract

The Los Angeles Sparks have revamped their roster this offseason starting with bringing back former franchise cornerstone Nneka Ogwumike, signing veteran guard Erica Wheeler and trading Rickea Jackson to the Chicago Sky for Ariel Atkins. Some continuity is needed, however, and the Sparks addressed that with the re-signing of veteran forward Emma Cannon.

Emma Cannon’s re-signing is a training camp contract meaning that it’s not guaranteed and she’ll have to make the team out of camp. However, it’s a good bet that Cannon isn’t in any danger of not making the Sparks’ final roster for the start of the regular season. She is well-liked in the locker room and every team needs a solid vet on the bench.

Last season was Cannon’s first with the Sparks. She played sparingly but was able to contribute spot minutes at the forward position at times. She appeared in a total of 21 games at a little over 10 minutes per game. She averaged 4.4 points and 1.8 rebounds with splits of 50.8 percent shooting from the field, 38.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 65.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Cannon began her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury in 2017 after going undrafted. She’s also had stints with the Las Vegas Aces, Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever across seven years in the league. She’s had an extensive career overseas as well.

With Cannon’s signing, the Sparks roster is essentially complete. They have eight players officially under contract now including Kelsey Plum, Ogwumike, Atkins, Wheeler, Dearica Hamby, Cameron Brink and Sania Feagin. The team has extended qualifying offers to Rae Burrell, Julie Vanloo and Alissa Pili.

If all three re-sign, that would bring the roster to 11 players. WNBA teams are required to carry a full 12-player roster under the new CBA. The Sparks also have the No. 20, 24 and 35 picks in the draft on Monday.
