Spain take the field in Los Angeles tonight in a World Cup quarter final for the first time since their victorious run to lifting the trophy for the first, and so far only, time in South Africa in 2010.
Luis de la Fuente’s side made the trip to North America this summer as the pre-tournament favourites to win the World Cup and add a second star to their shirt, after having stormed to glory in Euro 2024 in Germany two summers ago.
La Roja‘s World Cup campaign didn’t get off to the best start though, and were on the wrong end of one of the shocks of the tournament as they were held to a goalless draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde in Atlanta.
Spain quickly snapped back into gear for their second game, beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 before securing their first place finish in Group G with a 1-0 win over Uruguay in Guadalajara.
The European champions then made light work of Austria in their round of 32 clash before getting the better of local rivals and reigning Nations League champions Portugal in Dallas, with Mikel Merino’s only goal of the game in the first minute of second half stoppage time sending the Spaniards through to the quarter finals.
Spain have lost just one of their last 36 competitive matches in all competitions since March 2023, winning 31 of those, a run of matches which includes the winning of two trophies and a runners up medal – winning Euro 2024 and falling on both sides of the result in consecutive Nations League finals.
The European champions are also the only team in the World Cup yet to concede a goal all tournament.
Tonight will see Belgium compete in their third World Cup quarter final in the last three tournaments, booking their place in the last eight off the back of a thumping 4-1 win over tournament co-hosts USA.
Rudi Garcia’s side suffered from a slow start to the tournament, being held to disappointing draws against Egypt and Iran, before a 5-1 hammering against New Zealand in their final group game saw them finish top of Group G on goal difference.
The Red Devils then needed a comeback of epic proportions to progress beyond the round of 32, after they found themselves 2-0 down heading into the 86th minute against Senegal, scoring twice and three minutes to send the game to extra time before Youri Tielemans’ 125th minute penalty sent them into the last 16.
Goals from Charles DeKetelaere, Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku saw the Belgians comfortably through to the quarter finals, where they will no doubt come up against their toughest test of the tournament so far.
Garcia, who was appointed Belgium manager in January 2025, was beaten in his first game in charge of the nation, but hasn’t tasted defeat in any of his 18 matches since, and is currently on a three match winning streak ahead of their quarter final in Los Angeles against the reigning European champions.
Spain lead the head-to-head between the two nations 12-5 in wins across their 22 matches, which includes an undefeated streak in seven of their last eight meetings since Belgium knocked out Spain in the quarter finals of the 1986 World Cup on penalties.
Spain have since won their last five meetings between the two teams, David Silva scoring a brace in the most recent match, a friendly in Brussels in September 2016.
Get Yamal and Oyarzabal to each have a shot on target tonight at EVS with Betfred’s Turbo Boost.
