Sophie Cunningham on Fever fans booing Stephanie White for allegedly not having her back
The Indiana Fever always seem to be surrounded by controversy during the 2026 WNBA season. Fever coach Stephanie White pushed back at her critics before Tuesday’s game against the Liberty. Fortunately, the players in the locker room seem to completely have their head coach’s back despite all of the drama.
Fever guard Sophie Cunningham defended her head coach after fans booed White during pregame introductions on Tuesday.
“Our locker room in there, it’s tight, and we have each other’s backs,” Cunningham said, per ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. “Coach loves us. She didn’t see the clip … and that’s OK. Me and Steph are great. Steph is great with all of us, and so it’s really the outside noise that’s trying to distract us, but we’re good.”
White has come under fire after DiJonai Carrington’s flagrant foul on Cunningham during Saturday’s win over Chicago. Some fans feel that White should have defended Cunningham more in the media, suggesting she doesn’t fully support her.
White made it clear that she stands by her team before Tuesday’s game.
“We are united, we are connected, we will not be divided,” White said Tuesday. “Every day, these women put their a** on the line. Every day, when they go low, we go high. Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them. I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to h***.”
On the court, the Fever got a huge 106-92 win over the Liberty. Indiana’s red-hot duo of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell put up points in bunches. They extended their streak of the most combined points in league history to 11 games.
If Indiana can fight through all the off-the-court noise, they could be legitimate championship contenders this fall.
Next up for the Fever is a home game against the Wings. That matchup tips off at 7:30PM ET on August 14th from Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
