Sonny Styles’ Sean Taylor admiration will warm the Commanders fans’ hearts

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters was in disbelief when Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles was still available at the No. 7 overall pick.

Peters had evaluated Styles as a clear top-five talent and never expected to have the chance to select him.

The opportunity arose when the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to pick cornerback Mansoor Delane at No. 6, making Washington’s selection an “easy pick,” as Peters described it.

While Styles’ teammate Arvell Reese often receives more attention for his varied skill set, Peters believes that Styles is just beginning to tap into his full potential.

With the ability to play MIKE, WILL, or SAM linebacker, and even line up on the edge, Styles brings much-needed versatility to a defense that allowed the third-most rushing yards per game last season.

The connection between Styles and the Washington fan base deepened after a touching exchange shared by John Doran on X.

When asked if there was a specific player he looked up to or modeled his game after, Styles responded, “I didn’t grow up watching him, but Sean Taylor.”

Mentioning the name of the legendary safety resonates powerfully with any Washington supporter.

Even though Styles belongs to a younger generation that never witnessed Taylor’s on-field performances, except on YouTube, as he also said, his choice to study and imitate the late icon’s fierce, instinctive style of play demonstrates his understanding of the high standard of defensive excellence expected in D.C.

This selection marks a significant shift in the Commanders’ defensive identity.

Peters regards Styles as a “pressure player” who can effectively blitz or drop into coverage.

By bringing on a high-IQ athlete who appreciates the franchise’s history and possesses the physicality to excel at the second level, Washington has secured a key player for their rebuilding efforts.

Fans are already envisioning Styles patrolling the field with the same intensity as his idol, potentially becoming the “steal” of the 2026 draft class and a cornerstone for years to come.
