Shohei Ohtani Dodgers card sells for staggering price at auction

Shohei Ohtani will go down as one of the most mystifying athletes of all-time, but his incredible marketability is very easy to explain. The hitting and pitching superstar has already proven himself to be a money-printing machine for the Los Angels Dodgers, and he is now turning an eye-popping profit for an anonymous collector in Boca Raton, Florida.

“Shohei Ohtani’s ‘Back-to-Back Gold Logoman’ Topps baseball card just sold for $11 million, the third-highest price for a public sports trading card,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale posted on X. “The price-tag trailed only: The 2007-08 Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant collection ($12.9 million) and Mickey Mantle’s 1952 Topps card ($12.6 million).”

Besides being tremendous champions, Jordan, Bryant and Mantle all transcend the sports world. Ohtani can confidently claim the same. The Japanese juggernaut’s drawing power convinced someone to spend an obscene amount of money on a baseball card. While such an investment may seem foolish, it is actually conceivable that the value will appreciate.

Ohtani’s longevity as a pitcher continues to be a hot topic of conversation, but he is superb when healthy. Moreover, the 32-year-old remains lethal in the batter’s box. The two-time World Series champion and four-time MVP is batting .289 with 23 home runs, 21 doubles, a .394 on-base percentage, .537 slugging percentage and .931 OPS through 456 plate appearances.

If Los Angeles can become the first MLB franchise in 26 years to achieve a three-peat, then Ohtani-based items should continue to sell for a fortune. Collectors will be on high alert when the next rare Shotime card arrives on the scene.
