Eagles’ Vic Fangio urges Howie Roseman to save some money for 1 unsung defensive star

The Philadelphia Eagles are trying to get back to the top of the NFC this season after a disappointing end to last year, as they fell in the Wild Card Round to the San Francisco 49ers.

The offense is understandably getting a lot of the attention after it played a huge role in the downfall of the team last season. Following the year, Kevin Patullo was fired as the offensive coordinator and Sean Mannion was brought in to replace him. The Eagles also traded away disgruntled wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in a blockbuster offseason deal.

But the defense is what carried the Eagles last season, and it will be expected to do so once again while the new offense undergoes some growing pains this season. The Eagles have invested heavily in that side of the ball from a financial standpoint, most recently by making Jalen Carter the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the league.

Now, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wants GM Howie Roseman to make room for another young and talented defensive lineman. Moro Ojomo emerged as a key contributor for the Eagles last season, and whole he may be a bit underrated, Fangio wants to see him around for the forseeable future, via Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“I like him,” Fangio said of Ojomo. “Howie needs to save some money for him too.”

Ojomo is entering the final year of his rookie contract after the Eagles drafted him in the seventh round back in 2023, so he will be a free agent next offseason if Philly doesn’t sign him to an extension before then.

Last season, Ojomo set a number of career-highs, including 38 total tackles and six sacks, despite playing in a rotational role. The Eagles already have Carter and Jordan Davis extended on long-term deals, but depth on the defensive line has become more and more important in recent years. Getting Ojomo back on an extension at some point should be a priority for Roseman, and it certainly is for Fangio.
