Senators’ Ridly Greig gets disciplinary decision on sucker punch from Game 4 vs Hurricanes
There could be plenty of lasting effects to the Ottawa Senators’ failure to win a single game against the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, in the short term, Ridly Greig’s sucker punch will result in him missing the first two games of next season with a suspension, according to Frank Seravalli via X, formerly Twitter.
The Senators and Hurricanes had a ton of physical games during their four-game series, with Game 4 reaching another level thanks to some big hits and questionable plays. Tyler Kleven raised the temperature in the game after his massive hit on Alexander Nikishin, and it boiled over in a scrum at center ice with Greig hitting Walker with a gloved punch while he was engaged with another player.
The play broke some unwritten rules around league circles, and had plenty of analysts and former players weighing in on social media. Greig is a player who plays on the edge, which is why people enjoy watching him play, but this was a time when it looked like he took things a little too far.
George Parros has been under fire all season for his controversial decisions as head of player safety. The former enforcer knows all about the physicality of the game, and that’s why the NHL felt like he was the perfect person to judge suspensions. With Greig getting only two games for the sucker punch, there will likely be some who question why the number of games wasn’t higher.
