Scottie Scheffler fails to catch Rory McIlroy but he still made Masters history

Scottie Scheffler may be the top-ranked golfer in the world, but he found himself down by a dozen shots after two rounds of the Masters. No player had ever come back from more than an eight-shot deficit and he was clearly out of contention.

Scheffler did not get that message. After firing a 2 over par 74 in the second round, Scheffler found his game in the final two rounds of the tournament. He shot a brilliant 7-under 65 in the third round to get back into the race for the Green Jacket and he followed that up by firing a 4-under 68 in the final round. Scheffler finished second in the Masters, one stroke behind Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Ireland native won his second consecutive Green Jacket, shooting a 1-under 71 t finish with a 12 under par scored of 276.

McIlroy became the fourth player to win back-to-back titles at the Masters, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. Scheffler was hoping to gain his third Masters title. He won the Green Jacket in both 2022 and 2024.

Scheffler accomplished something no other Masters competitor had ever achieved. He played bogey-free golf in the final two rounds and no player — including legendary champions Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Nicklaus and Woods — had ever played the final two rounds without having a single bogey in the final 36 holes.

Scheffler said he was not happy with the way he played in the first two rounds.

“Overall I’m not going to hold too many regrets, but yeah, definitely a bit disappointed now,” he said. “But like I said, I started the weekend 12 shots back and ended up only one shot back. If I am going to blame anything, I should probably blame the first two rounds before I start looking at stuff from the last couple.”
