Scotland vs Curacao prediction

Scotland’s preparation for the first World Cup appearance since 1998 get well and truly underway on Saturday afternoon as they take on Curacao in the first of two warm up friendlies before their tournament gets underway in Boston on 13th June.

Steve Clarke’s side are in action at Hampden Park in Glasgow in their final match before the head stateside, initially for a friendly against Bolivia in New Jersey, before their World Cup group stage campaign with matches in Boston against Haiti and Morocco, before heading to Miami to take on the mighty Brazil.

The Scots qualified for their first World Cup this century, having missed out on the previous six, in dramatic fashion, winning four of their last five qualifiers, culminating in the most dramatic of victories against Denmark in their final, to book their ticket to North America.

It hasn’t been completely plain sailing for Clarke’s men since then though, losing both of their March friendlies in their final camp before the World Cup, being beaten by Japan in Glasgow and Ivory Coast in Liverpool, leaving them with three defeats in their last four matches.

Saturday’s match will be Curacao’s first ever match against European opposition in their short history, having only played their first recognised international match back in 2011.

15 years later, the small Dutch island in the Caribbean is preparing for their first ever World Cup campaign after winning seven of their 10 matches in qualifying, to become the smallest nation in history, by both area and population, to qualify for the most followed sporting event in the world.

Former Netherlands, Rangers and Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat will be taking charge of the Blue Wave for the first time on Saturday in his second spell with the island nation.

The 78-year-old, who will break the record as the oldest manager in World Cup history this summer, has spent most of the last two and a half years as Curacao manager, but stepped down in February this year due to his daughter’s health concerns, but was reinstated earlier this month.

Since securing qualification to this summer’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA with a historic 0-0 draw in Jamaica, the Caribbean nation travelled to Australia in March to play friendlies against China and the Socceroos, losing 2-0 and 5-1 respectively, ending a run of just one defeat in 11, and an unbeaten run of six.

After their match in Glasgow this weekend, the Blue Wave will then return home for a friendly against neighbours Aruba next weekend, before travelling to the USA for their World Cup campaign consisting of matches against Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast in Houston, Kansas City and Philadelphia respectively.

Scotland will be eager to impress in their final home match before their first World Cup campaign since 1998, with players eager to win over Clarke with a potential spot in their starting XI against Haiti for the World Cup opener in Boston up for grabs.

Scotland’s quality in their squad should far outweigh their opponents, and one would it expect it to be a comfortable victory for the Tartan Army in their send off match, perhaps a 3-0 home win looking likely to lift the fans’ spirits.

Scotland vs Curacao betting tips

Special send off for Tartan Army

Scotland have won three of their last four matches at Hampden Park and will be eager to impress in their final match in charge in front of their home fans before departing for the USA for a momentous first World Cup campaign since 1998.

Their are more than a few places in the starting XI up for grabs for Steve Clarke’s opening match of the World Cup against Haiti in Boston in a fortnight’s time, so players will be giving their all to be named in that side.

Curacao fell to defeats against China and Australia in the most recent international break and a trip to a fired up Scotland side could prove to much for them on Saturday.

Hirst on hand

George Hirst received the call up to Scotland’s first World Cup since 1998 after a scoring 11 goals leading the line for Ipswich in their promotion winning season which saw them climb back in to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Scotland’s striker selection for their first World Cup match is far from decided, and Hirst could be the man trusted to lead the line on Saturday.
