Sabres’ Zach Benson reveals ‘unreal’ connection with linemates after Game 1 win

The Buffalo Sabres were victorious on Wednesday night in Game 1 against the Montreal Canadiens. Buffalo got big efforts from Josh Doan and Zach Benson to claim an important series-opening victory. The chemistry between Benson and his linemates has certainly shown itself during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Benson plays on the left wing on the Sabres third line, alongside Doan and center Josh Norris. This line has combined for 11 points in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. Benson and Doan each had two points in the win on Wednesday, as well. After the game, Benson spoke about how his line is able to thrive in the way that it has.

“I think it’s just the intensity. I’m a competitive person. I think our line’s been great. ‘Doaner’ is a playoff guy, (Norris) is a playoff guy. It’s been really fun so far,” the Sabres forward said, via Sportsnet. “It’s been unreal.”

The Sabres did not get a ton of scoring chances in Game 1 on Wednesday night. In fact, they were held to fewer than 20 shots on goal. Still, it did not matter. Buffalo received goals from four different players to skate away with a 4-2 win over the Canadiens.

Buffalo has shown that it can capitalize on any number of chances they are given. They are certainly in the driver’s seat early in this series. However, Benson and his team are fully aware that the Canadiens are here for a reason. Buffalo will look to keep a motivated Montreal team at bay on Friday night when the puck drops on Game 2.
