Sabres rumors: Zach Benson gets massive contract extension update
The season for the Buffalo Sabres was a resounding success from the mid-point of December on, as they became one of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League and exploded to the top of the Atlantic Division standings, winning the division for the first time since they advanced to the Eastern Conference Final in the days of Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, and a young Ryan Miller in 2007.
While they defeated the divisional rival Boston Bruins in round one, they fell in seven games to the upstart Montreal Canadiens in the following round. Still, there is plenty to be excited about when it comes to the Sabres’ future, and it sounds as though they’re trying to keep one of their talented young pieces around for the long term.
According to former NHL goaltender and current Insider Kevin Weekes, the Sabres are at work on a new extension for forward Zach Benson comparable to that of Josh Doan’s recent extension.
“Per sources, I’m told the Buffalo Sabres are working away on a new Contract Extension for F Benson coming off a solid regular season and big playoffs, that could land in 7Yr x 7M+ AAV comparable to their deal with Doan,” Weekes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Benson, whom the Sabres took in the first round (13th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, reached a career-high 43 points after scoring 13 goals with 30 assists during the regular season, and followed that up with five goals and four assists in 13 postseason games.
In the 211 games he’s skated in, Benson has 34 goals with 67 assists.
