Sabres GM reveals painful injury Owen Power played through in Canadiens series
The season for the Buffalo Sabres, which experienced one of the more remarkable turnarounds in recent NHL memory starting in mid-December, came to a painful close on Sunday evening on home ice at KeyBank Center.
The Sabres were defeated in overtime of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal against the divisional rival Montreal Canadiens, thanks to the second straight Game 7 game-winning goal scored by Habs forward Alex Newhook.
The Canadiens are now in the Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Sabres are left picking up the pieces and wondering what else they could have done to gain the upper hand.
Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen, who replaced the fired Kevyn Adams in December, is revealing that defenseman Owen Power played through a significant injury suffered during the series against the Canadiens.
“Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen said Owen Power was dealing with a grade three ankle sprain late in the Montreal series,” wrote Sabres beat writer Matthew Fairburn on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Power was selected with the first overall pick by the Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft out of the University of Michigan, and he made his NHL debut with the Sabres during the 2021-22 season, appearing in eight games.
So far in his NHL career, Power has played in 323 games, scoring 27 goals with 113 assists, along with 86 penalty minutes. In his first experience of Stanley Cup Playoff action, he appeared in 13 games and registered six assists, not missing a game despite the injury.
He also became the first Sabres player to earn an assist in his first four career playoff games.
