Ryan Weathers left out to dry by dismal Yankees offense amid elite performance

The New York Yankees have dropped to 8-4 on the season after suffering a 1-0 loss to the Athletics on Thursday afternoon. The A’s even took the series with back-to-back wins in the Bronx.

This was a very low-scoring series, as both teams managed to score exactly seven runs each in three games combined. On Thursday, the Yankees’ offense was completely silent, not seeing a runner cross home plate even once. Tyler Soderstrom singled to right in the 7th inning to score Max Muncy for the only run of the game. That run would be allowed by Ryan Weathers, but the young southpaw was not to blame for the loss on Thursday.

Weathers absolutely shoved against the A’s, going 8.0 innings and finishing with seven strikeouts in one of the better starts of his career. According to Talkin’ Yanks, Weathers is the first Yankee to pitch 8+ innings and take the loss since Domingo German pitched 8.1 innings in a 3-2 loss to Cleveland on May 1, 2023.

This elite start ensured a Yankees’ record as well.

“The Yankees starting rotation is yielding a dazzling 2.14 ERA this season, permitting just 16 earned runs, the fewest in franchise history through the first 12 games of a season,” said Bob Nightengale via X.

The former Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres starter was traded to the Yankees this past offseason and is a sneaky rising star for this ballclub. With all the injuries to the rotation, Weathers will continue to earn starts.

Aaron Boone got honest about the poor offense displayed this series against the Athletics.

“We got shut down today. We didn’t generate much, we didn’t hit a lot of balls on the screws at all.”
