Ryan Pepiot’s season is over after hip surgery update
The Tampa Bay Rays were hopeful that Ryan Pepiot would eventually make his way back to the mound this season. However, the latest update regarding his right hip inflammation reveals he will sit out for the rest of the campaign.
Reports indicate that the 28-year-old starting pitcher is out for the season as he will be undergoing surgery, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Pepiot will not make an appearance in a game until the 2027 season.
“BREAKING: Rays Pepiot out for season, having hip surgery,” reported Topkin.
This is rather brutal news for the Rays, as the initial belief was that Pepiot wasn’t going to remain on the IL for all that long to begin the season. But swapping him off the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL in mid-April proved otherwise. Pepiot will undergo the surgery in mid-May.
With the four-year veteran done, the Rays are utilizing a rotation consisting of Drew Rasmussen, Steven Matz, Shane McClanahan, and Jesse Scholtens. Joe Boyle also remains on the 15-day IL and is expected to return at some point in May.
After beginning his MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ryan Pepiot made his debut with the Rays in 2024 in a trade that involved star pitcher Tylor Glasnow. Pepiot has been a rather consistent option on the mound, as the right-hander owns a career 3.54 ERA and 1.144 WHIP while recording 389 strikeouts.
Despite the injury concerns with Ryan Pepiot, the Rays are playing competitively to begin the 2026 campaign. In second place of the AL East, Tampa Bay will aim to earn its 19th win of the season on Friday when the club takes on the San Francisco Giants.
