Royals’ Cole Ragans drops ‘pissed off’ admission after landing on injured list

The Kansas City Royals placed starting pitcher Cole Ragans on the injured list on Friday. Ragans exited his most recent start early with an injury and was ultimately placed on the IL with a left elbow impingement. The Royals ace addressed the news later on Friday, via Mark Poulose.

“I mean to say I’m not pissed off would be a lie,” Ragans said. “It’s never fun to go on the IL, but pretty optimistic about it. Pretty optimistic that I’ll bounce back pretty quick… Did all the testing stuff, everything came back good. So, like I said, pretty optimistic about it.”

Royals manager Matt Quatraro later said that he believes it will be a minimum stay on the injured list for Ragans. Overall, it seems like the southpaw avoided a serious injury. He will obviously be missed during his injury absence nonetheless.

Ragans, 28, has turned in a 4.84 ERA across eight outings so far in 2026. It was far from his best performance, but Ragans still features the ceiling of one of the best pitchers in baseball when he is on top of his game.

The Royals are playing the Tigers on Friday night. Kansas City is 17-21 overall and in fourth place in the American League Central standings. They are hoping to seriously compete for the lead in the AL Central. Taking care of business against a division rival will certainly help matters. Friday night’s contest is the first matchup of a three-game series between the Tigers and Royals in Kansas City.
