Rory McIlroy leaves commentators in disbelief with hilarious hot mic claim at Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy is one of the world’s greatest ever golfers – but he certainly didn’t think that of himself at the Scottish Open.

The back-to-back Masters champion incredibly claimed he is ‘so bad at golf’ after a poor shot during his final round on Sunday.

McIlroy appeared to be in contention at the top of the leaderboard at The Renaissance Club in Scotland heading into the weekend.

However, a three-over-par round on Saturday saw him plummet down the rankings and seemingly lose all hope.

That changed again in his final round though, as he impressively shot a -6 to bring himself into the leading pack again.

He eventually finished just short of the leaders, despite making eight birdies throughout his closing 18 holes.

But McIlroy may think it was a missed opportunity and he will potentially look back at Hole 16 as one that cost him.

The Northern Irishman bogeyed the 16th and during his play on that hole, he left commentators in complete disbelief.

As McIlroy took his second shot, he pulled it to the left, missing the green and sending his ball well into the rough.

And as soon as he saw the ball whipping well off the mark, he looked to the sky and exclaimed: “Oh my god, I’m so bad at golf!”

Alongside his Sky Sports colleagues, a shocked Nick Dougherty then comically reacted to the claim with: “Erm… that’s a lie.”

The commentators were left in disbelief as pictures showed McIlroy stood still with his hands on his head, with them going on to add: “A highly relatable sport that changes every day.”

If McIlroy is ‘so bad’, then what are we?

McIlroy’s hilarious hot mic comment will have all golfers around the nation questioning just how bad they are…

Only six male golfers have ever completed the Career Grand Slam in the history of the sport – one of them is McIlroy.

He achieved the feat last year by finally winning the Masters and went on to win it again a year later, adding to his US Open, The Open and two PGA Championships.

That makes him a six-time major winner, while he has also won the Ryder Cup six times and boasts 45 professional wins.

McIlroy has also spent over 100 weeks as World No.1.

So, if he’s ‘so bad’, what level is everyone else on the planet?

Looking ahead

McIlroy seemed to be keeping positive after his mishap on the 16th, as he did end his round six-under-par on Sunday.

But he’s keen to improve further ahead of The Open next week.

He said at the end of his final round in Scotland: “I felt like I was pretty much in control of everything after the first two days.

“But the long day yesterday, waiting around and when we ended the third round today, I didn’t finish particularly well.

“I tried to figure it out on the range before going out for the fourth round…but there was some good and some bad out there.

“I’m going to have to work on that before Thursday.”
