Rival GM thinks Kawhi Leonard getting contract voided would be ‘reward’ for Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers are facing a crucial offseason focused on the future of Kawhi Leonard.
Although Leonard had an impressive season, staying healthy and producing at an All-NBA level, the team’s shift toward a younger roster, highlighted by trading James Harden for Darius Garland and acquiring the No. 5 draft pick, has introduced considerable uncertainty.
Tim MacMahon reports that while extending Leonard is the goal, negotiations are far from guaranteed, which leaves open the possibility of a blockbuster trade this summer.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps, the Clippers are considering three distinct options: extend Leonard, hold off on a decision, or trade him.
Leonard, who averaged 28 points in 65 games, remains a highly valuable asset.
One Eastern Conference executive even mentioned that they would prefer him over Giannis Antetokounmpo based on Leonard’s recent performance.
However, a potential investigation into salary cap circumvention adds an unexpected twist; a rival Western Conference general manager hinted that if the league were to void Leonard’s contract, it could actually “reward” the Clippers by clearing their financial obligations.
The No. 5 draft pick adds another layer of complexity to the roster, as top prospects like Kingston Flemings and Darius Acuff play the same position as Garland.
This forces the team to consider whether they can pair two small guards effectively, or if another trade is necessary to balance the lineup.
This situation has drawn the attention of Draymond Green, who questioned on his podcast whether the Clippers will choose to build around Leonard or trade him to initiate a rebuild.
Green cautioned that if the team loses Leonard due to their recent decisions, the trade that brought them the No. 5 pick could be remembered as one of the “top five worst trades” in NBA history.
As the draft approaches, the Clippers must determine if their window for a championship is still open or if it’s time for a complete overhaul.
