Rick Pitino teases another bombshell move after landing Tounde Yessoufou
St. John’s basketball plucked away an NBA Draft prospect Wednesday night in landing Tounde Yessoufou. Grabbing the Baylor standout before the draft sent new shockwaves across the college basketball world. Yet head coach Rick Pitino teased another bombshell move coming to the Red Storm Thursday.
The past national champion winning head coach took to the social media website X, formerly Twitter, to share that announcement.
“Super excited for the addition of Tounde. We will add one more scholarship player in the next 24 hours and are roster will be complete. Couldn’t be more fired up for this upcoming season!” Pitino posted.
No word on who else will head to the Queens, New York university. But that player will further fuel Final Four chatter on campus.
Yessoufou adds to a loaded College Basketball Transfer Portal class for the Big East champs. He leaves the Bears after averaging 17.8 points per game with 5.9 rebounds. He’s no stranger to playing for a Catholic institution, though. Yessoufou became a blue chip five-star prospect out of St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria, California, becoming the first-ever five-star to come out of that region regardless of sport.
St. John’s has delivered multiple aggressive offseason roster moves already. Including adding legacy commit Kyle Cuffe Jr. who shares two unique ties to the university: His father played on St. John’s during the early 2000s and the youngest was Kansas roommates with last season’s Red Storm leading scorer Zuby Ejiofor.
The Sweet 16 team of 2026 even added Donnie Freeman of Syracuse, handing Pitino a past 16.5 points per game scorer. St. John’s also retained star from the second round Kansas upset Ian Jackson plus Ruben Prey.
