Red Sox’s Sonny Gray drops mic on pressure pitching after ‘Beast’ Garrett Crochet
The Boston Red Sox made some moves during the offseason to add to the pitching staff. One of the team’s new pitchers is veteran Sonny Gray, who was acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. Gray opened up about pitching behind team ace Garrett Crochet.
Gray said that watching Crochet work makes him want to be a better pitcher.
“I was just thinking ‘Happy flight, happy flight’ — you want to win on get-away day. I watched Beast last night, the game was over, and it was like, ‘OK, it’s my turn to go out there and keep it going,’” Gray said, per the Athletic.
Gray helped guide the Red Sox to a win on Wednesday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Boston has won back-to-back games, after defeating Milwaukee 5-0.
In the game, Gray pitched six-plus innings. He allowed just three hits, and struck out two.
Red Sox are off to a rocky start

The 2026 season hasn’t started the way Boston wanted. The Red Sox are just 4-8 on the year so far, and are sitting in the cellar of the American League East.
Red Sox fans hope that the team can feed off of Gray’s strong start Wednesday. Crochet and Gray have helped lead Boston to two straight victories. That was what the team wanted to see after trading for Gray this offseason.
Gray was so fired up on Wednesday, he was ready to stay in the game during the seventh.
“I just said, ‘I have another zero in me if you need it,’” Gray said. “I didn’t know where our bullpen stood or where we were at.”
Boston currently sits at four and half games behind in the AL East.
“We’re supposed to pitch,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Now it’s (Connelly) Early on Friday. If we continue to pitch, we’re going to be OK.”
Boston next plays the St. Louis Cardinals in a series starting Friday.
