‘Really upset’ – Oliver Glasner rages at Crystal Palace bosses over Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze transfers in scathing interview

Oliver Glasner says he feels ‘abandoned’ by senior figures at Crystal Palace over the club’s recent player sales.

The Eagles boss gave the bombshell interview following Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat at Sunderland on Saturday.

It comes after a tumultuous 24 hours at the club that saw Glasner confirm that captain Marc Guehi is in the final stages of a move to Manchester City.

The Austrian also revealed he will leave Palace at the end of the current campaign for a new challenge.

And to make matters worse, top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta is pushing for a January exit with Juventus opening talks with his representatives.

‘We feel abandoned’

Following Saturday’s defeat, Glasner hit out at the club’s transfer activity and the lack of depth within his squad.

“A difficult result, difficult for me to accept. Not because of the performance, the players tried everything until the end. They’re leaving their heart on the pitch,” he told talkSPORT.

“But we feel that we are being abandoned completely. Selling our captain one day before a Premier League game.

“There was no understanding, we’re playing with 12, 13 players from our original squad for weeks now. That makes it so tough to accept.

“We had no substitution. I was looking on the bench, just kids there. That’s how it is, that’s why we are where we are.

“If your heart gets torn out twice a season, one day before a game, with Eze in summer and your captain now, I have just completely no understanding.

“I think the players deserve more support. That’s what they deserve.

“If a player gets fatigued, another one can come in. Who can help winning a game? Nobody who was sitting on the bench has Premier League experience.

“Nobody has played in this atmosphere. If we do it, to make a substitution is just hope.

“It just shows what is the ambition. If we feel 28 points, we will get these 10 points, not get relegated. You can act like this.

“This is my feeling. It’s now, we’re fine, we’re in the Conference League, let’s see how far it goes. Then, points is fine, we won’t get relegated, it’s all good.

“When I see the players, what they are investing, when I see my staff, what they are investing, then it just feels, yes, it would be nice if we get more support, definitely, yes.”

Blindsided

Glasner revealed that Guehi’s impending sale took him by surprise and that his preparation for Saturday’ s game was one that included the England international.

“I don’t know the situation with Marc,” he added. “I heard the first time yesterday at 10:30am that he will leave.

So, preparing for the game, set plays, everything was ready, trained in the week. 10:30am I get told that Mark will leave. So why not next week? Let him play a game.

“I’ve seen this with other clubs, playing, scoring a game winner and leaving the following day. So why not here? Why not say, ‘OK, you can leave but play this game for us?’

“For me, I have to protect this group of players because they’re giving everything and they deserve that.

“I’m here and don’t blame them for anything because they gave everything. They did it. And we can’t expect more than they did.

“And if somebody believes I’m the wrong one, they should let me know. But these players do everything and that’s why I’m saying these hard words because I feel as their manager that I have to protect them.

“This is the feeling in the dressing room and this is the feeling in the staff – and then we need to change this.

“I’ve been telling them [the board] for months.

Asked when Mateta’s could potentially leave the club, the Crystal Palace boss said: “And about Jean-Philippe? I don’t know. No idea. Nobody told me. Maybe before the next game.”

Palace are currently in freefall and without a win in their last ten games across all competitions.

Last weekend’s FA Cup third-round exit to sixth-tier Macclesfield was the lowest point of his time at the club and set the tone for what was to come this week.

Defeat at the Stadium of Light saw Palace slip to 13th in the table, but crucially they sit 11 points above the drop zone.

However, failure to stop the rot could see the FA Cup holder sucked into an unlikely relegation scrap.
