Garret Anderson gets touching tribute from Angel Stadium groundskeepers

Former Los Angeles Angels outfielder Garret Anderson has passed away at the age of 53, and the team’s groundskeepers are honoring his memory as the team prepares to host the San Diego Padres Friday night.

The Angels grounds crew mowed his initials into center field as they prepared for the series after the Angels returned home following their four-game series in New York against the Yankees.

Anderson’s cause of death was the result of a heart attack, per Tyler Kepner of The Athletic.

Angels owner Arte Moreno released a statement honoring Anderson and his achievements with the team. “Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. His admiration and respect for the game was immeasurable,” Moreno said.

Anderson was a consistent star for Angels

Anderson had a 17-year big league career and 15 of his seasons were with the Angels. He was a three-time All-Star outfielder with the team and he won the All-Star Most Valuable Player Award in 2003 when he went 3 for 4 with a first-inning home run for the American League. Anderson was a key player on the 2002 World Series champion Angels and he was a two-time Silver Slugger winner.

The Angels were more frequent postseason participants during Anderson’s career than they have been in recent years. He played in 5 AL Divison Series, 2 AL Championship Series and 1 World Series. The Angels defeated the San Francisco Giants in 7 games in that World Series.

Anderson was one of the better hitters in the American League throughout his career. He slashed .293/.324/.461 with 287 home runs and 1,365 runs batted in. He had a career-high 35 home runs in 2000 and that season began a streak of four consecutive season with 116 RBI or more.

Anderson concluded his career with the Atlanta Braves in 2009 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010.
