Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich predictions and betting tips – Clash of European titans

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are two of the most successful clubs in the history of the Champions League, but one of them will not make it beyond the quarter-finals this season.

Will Madrid come out on top in front of their own fans at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, or will Bayern have the better of this first leg?

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich predictions

Whenever these two European heavyweights go head-to-head in a competitive fixture, it is a great occasion.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have won 21 Champions Leagues between them: 15 for the former and six for the latter.

They are the biggest and most successful clubs in their respective countries, and they enter virtually every season with the goal of being crowned kings of the continent.

The pair have had very different domestic seasons. Bayern are on course to break several records on their way to the Bundesliga title, whereas Madrid look set to finish as runners-up in La Liga.

Even so, both clubs’ seasons will ultimately be defined by how they get on in Europe. If Madrid were to win the Champions League and the Bundesliga title was to be Bayern’s only trophy, Los Blancos would have had the better campaign.

Madrid have long measured themselves by their Champions League performances above all else. That is no surprise given they have won this tournament more than twice as often as the second-most successful side, AC Milan.

Ever since they triumphed in the inaugural edition of the European Cup in 1959/60, Madrid have been the most successful team in the tournament’s history. It may take another half a century before that changes – if it ever does.

Make no mistake, though: Madrid need Champions League glory to salvage their season. They are seven points off the pace in the La Liga title race following a surprise 2-1 loss to Real Mallorca at the weekend.

Elsewhere, Madrid exited the Copa del Rey at the hands of second-tier Albacete in the round of 16, while they were beaten by Barcelona in the final of the Supercopa de Espana. A first season without silverware since 2020/21 is a genuine possibility.

Bayern will add another Bundesliga crown to their collection in the coming weeks, but a second consecutive quarter-final elimination from the Champions League would be a blow to Vincent Kompany, who knows he will primarily be judged on this competition.

The historic head-to-head record is close with 13 wins for Madrid, 11 wins for Bayern and four draws. Madrid have scored 45 goals against Bayern and conceded 42.

The last four Champions League ties between these two giants have gone Madrid’s way, so Bayern will feel a victory is long overdue.

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich betting tips

Real Madrid host Bayern Munich in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

Madrid save best for Europe

It is interesting to see that the bookies make Bayern Munich the favourites to win the first leg of this quarter-final clash.

There is no question that Bayern have been the better team over the course of the campaign up to now.

They finished above Real Madrid in the league phase and have been more convincing domestically, albeit in a weaker league (relative to their own resources, at least).

But Madrid have a knack for turning it on in the Champions League, particularly at home.

On top of that, Bayern have not won any of their last eight trips to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. We fancy Madrid to at least avoid defeat in front of their own supporters.

Goals await in Spain

The first leg of knockout ties are often cagey affairs as the fear of defeat trumps the lure of victory.

But given the way these two teams play, this promises to be a much more open encounter in the Spanish capital.

Bayern Munich are arguably the most effective attacking team in Europe, with Kompany encouraging them to play on the front foot no matter the opposition.

Real Madrid will fight fire with fire on home turf, so this will probably be a difficult night for both defensive units. Goals are on the cards when Madrid host Bayern.

Kane in form of life

It would be overly simplistic to paint this as a direct clash between Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have other players capable of making the difference on the night, from Vinicius Junior, Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham to Michael Olise, Luis Diaz and Serge Gnabry.

Ultimately, though, Mbappe and Kane are the main men for their respective sides, so all eyes will be on the strikers at kick-off.

While both players have been suffering with injuries of late, it is hard to see either sitting this one out. At odds close to evens, Kane is our pick to make the net ripple.
