Rangers manager Skip Schumaker happy to be on same side of Jacob deGrom’s 100th win

The Texas Rangers gave manager Skip Schumaker a new perspective on Jacob deGrom’s dominance Monday night. After years of seeing deGrom from the opposing dugout, Schumaker watched him secure his 100th career win for Texas in a 2-1 victory vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

deGrom worked five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight. The start helped the club extend their rotation’s scoreless streak to 27 consecutive innings and gave the club a strong opening to the road series.

The matchup carried a familiar backdrop for the Rangers’ first-year manager. During his time in the National League, he often saw deGrom control games for the New York Mets. Monday offered a different experience, with Schumaker managing the team behind him instead of planning against him.

Rangers Sports Network posted the postgame interview Monday on X, formerly Twitter, after Schumaker discussed deGrom’s 100th win, Jacob Latz’s ninth-inning role, and the rotation’s scoreless stretch.

Schumaker then explained what made the milestone enjoyable from his side of the dugout.

“Yeah, unfortunately, I was on the other side of a lot of those wins. He’s been so dominant throughout his career. It’s so nice to be, and so fun to be a part of his 100th win.”

Latz protected the lead with a perfect ninth for his eighth save. The win kept the second-place Rangers two games behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and gave Texas another sign that its rotation is gaining rhythm in June.
