Rangers’ Corey Seager makes Dodgers pay with 3-run homer

Oh what a difference 45 minutes can make. Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager received plenty of warmth from Los Angeles Dodgers fans when he approached the batter’s box in the first inning during Friday’s inter-league matchup, but that gratitude turned into groans after his next plate appearance.

The veteran left-handed hitter, who spent seven years with LA before signing a $325 million contract with Texas in 2021, belted a two-out, three-run homer off Tyler Glasnow in the third inning. The 409-foot bomb gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead and reminded Chavez Ravine just how impactful Seager can be with a bat. He spoiled the crowd’s good time, but only temporarily.

The Dodgers overcame the deficit and handed closer Edwin Diaz a three-run lead in the final frame. The three-time Reliever of the Year imploded on the mound, giving up three runs on four hits and one walk. Max Muncy gave the home fans one final see-saw ride, launching his third home run of the night to vault the Dodgers to an 8-7 walk-off victory.

Although it was Shohei Ohtani’s bobblehead night, the slugging third baseman proved to be the show-stealer in this one. But Corey Seager still made his presence known in defeat.

The five-time All-Star hit his fourth long ball of the season and now has an .811 OPS. While he obviously wanted to be on the winning side, Seager surely took some pleasure in going deep in the place he called home from 2015-21.

The No. 18 selection in the 2012 MLB Draft helped Los Angeles win its first championship in 32 years in 2020, before then boosting the Rangers to their first-ever title in 2023. The two-time World Series MVP is always a threat when healthy, which is a claim that LA can certainly back up.

Seager batted .297 with 104 home runs, 364 RBIs, a .504 slugging percentage and .870 OPS in 636 regular season games with the Boys in Blue. He created some special memories during his time in the City of Angels, but his latest Dodger Stadium dinger will be overshadowed by Muncy’s historic performance.

Seager and the Rangers (7-6) will try to sleep this one off and return to the ballpark with a vengeance on Saturday night.
