Raiders’ Fernando Mendoza, Kirk Cousins recreate ‘Step Brothers’ scenes

The Las Vegas Raiders have two of the NFL’s most unique personalities in their quarterback room, and they jumped at the opportunity to showcase them in the annual schedule release video. Rookie Fernando Mendoza and veteran Kirk Cousins paid homage to “Step Brothers,” doing their best to mirror the child-like enthusiasm that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly displayed in the 2008 comedy.

There were references galore, as the Silver and Black tried to ramp up excitement for the new campaign by serving fans a few spoonfuls of nostalgia. Cousins and Mendoza had what was supposed to be their “first encounter,” which ended with both men requesting to go by the nicknames “Kirko Chainz” and “The Nandolorian,” respectively.

Other memorable moments included Cousins breaking into song and shrieking “Condor” at the sight of the imposing Maxx Crosby. Even a Donny Osmond mention found its way into the video.

Mendoza did his best to keep up with his co-star, exuding the positivity and politeness that Indiana Hoosiers fans came to appreciate last season. But Cousins stole the show. Although this was scripted, it is encouraging to see the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick and the four-time Pro Bowler have some fun together before organized team activities begin.

The Raiders signed Kirk Cousins to what essentially amounts to a one-year, $20 million contract in order to ease Fernando Mendoza’s transition into the starting role. Obviously, they each want to take snaps under center, but those conflicting interests do not appear to be affecting their work relationship and budding friendship.

The Step Brothers-inspired shenanigans will hopefully distract Raider Nation from the squad’s brutal schedule. Las Vegas will face the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos all in a two-month span. Yikes.

The vibes will have to be mighty strong if the Raiders are going to survive that grueling stretch. This skit is a good start.
