Raging Mauricio Pochettino explodes on touchine as USMNT stutter on World Cup stage

The 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash between the United States Men’s National Team and Belgium got off to the worst possible start for the hosts at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Pochettino‘s squad trailed 2-1 at half-time, managing just one shot on target and being comprehensively outplayed by a Belgium team who rose to the occasion.

Having hauled themselves level in the game just after the half hour, Pochettino could not hide his rage as Belgium retook the lead barely two minutes later.

Watching on from the sideline, his team’s defensive efforts left the usually mild-mannered Pochettino livid.

Cameras immediately panned to him taking out his frustrations on the water bottle crate, aiming a furious kick and sending the bottles across his technical arena.

The US had conceded in the ninth minute of the game after Charles De Ketelaere got on the end of a cross inside the box after the USMNT failed to clear their lines.

It was a deserved punishment for the Stars and Stripes after a slow start, as the atmosphere and occasion seemed to have got the better of them and suck the life out of Seattle Stadium.

The momentum appeared to shift after the mandatory hydration break as the USA fought back with their first shot of the game.

Malik Tillman’s free kick from just outside the area – with the foul initially won by Folarin Balogunwho had been named in the starting line-up after his ban for a red card was suspended for a year – deflected off of Hans Vanaken.

Vanaken had not been on the pitch long himself after Rudi Garcia was forced into an early change after Amadou Onana suffered what appeared to be a knee injury.

However, it took Belgium less than two minutes to reclaim the lead with De Ketelaere getting his second after a teasing Leandro Trossard cross into the area.

Livid Pochettino summed up mood of USA fans

Pochettino’s outburst drew the attention of many fans watching the game, with one fan commenting on social media, “Pochettino spoke for all of America with that kick 😡.”

“He’s right to be. The absolute garbage performance of the whole tournament defensively,” a second user wrote in the comments.

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy, who has made a career out of being an outspoken character, also weighed in on the defensive efforts from the USMNT’s back line.

Thats the worst defense ive seen in this world cup. Gotta wake up asap,” Portnoy wrote on X.

He later added: “Our defense absolutely sucks. Ream just got rag dolled. Goalie shoulda punched it out Horrible defense all game.”

“Those are the kind of reactions I want from my coach. It shows he cares! Come on Pochettino get these guys right at halftime!” another fan added.

“I can accept the USMNT being outclassed by a clearly superior opponent. But that’s not what this has been. We’re being out-fought and outrun. Hard to imagine coming out this flat in the biggest game in American soccer history. Poch better light those boys up at halftime,” another wrote.

With Belgium unable to inflict any additional pain on the host nation before half time, Pochettino didn’t hesitate in making changes to his line up to begin the second half, with Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Giovanni Reyna brought onto the field, replacing Sergiño Dest.

Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse for the States as a calamitous error by goalkeeper Matt Freese led to a third goal for the European outfit, before Christian Pulisic hobbled off in tears on the hour mark after having appeared to pick up an injury.

The damage was too far done on this occasion, and Belgium’s all-time leading goalscorer Romelu Lukaku hit the final dagger blow in stoppage time after Chris Richards was unable to get the ball out from under his feet to clear his lines.

With a final score of 4-1 to Belgium, what had been such a promising tournament for the co-hosts completely crumbled when the spotlight was firmly on them.

And with that, the American Dream is over.
