Phillies’ Don Mattingly shuts down concern over Kyle Schwarber’s back injury
Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber was scratched from the team’s lineup on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals due to lower back tightness. While the injury worried fans, Phillies interim manager shut down concern over Schwarber’s back issue after the game, via Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
“Kyle Schwarber’s back locked up about 10 minutes before first pitch, so Phillies played it safe. There was no larger concern, Don Mattingly said. They’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Gelb reported.
Schwarber was scratched right before the contest began. Although they were playing without one of their best hitters, the Phillies’ lineup had no trouble against the Nationals. Philadelphia earned a 14-9 victory on Tuesday night.
Nevertheless, the Phillies are still hopeful that the slugger can return sooner rather than later. Schwarber is one of the best hitters in the game.
The 33-year-old has recorded a slash line of .252/.365/.594 to go along with 29 home runs this year. His 29 long balls and .594 slugging percentage both lead the league. After finishing second in National League MVP voting a season ago, the veteran slugger is once again making a significant impact for the Phillies.
Philadelphia improved to 43-36 overall with Tuesday night’s victory. The ball club is in second place in the National League East standings and six games behind the Atlanta Braves in the division.
Updates on Kyle Schwarber’s injury status will be provided as they are made available. It remains to be seen if he will be available on Wednesday. Wednesday’s ball game is scheduled for 6:45 PM EST.
