Peter Schrager ‘loves fit’ for this Fred Warner-esque LB with Commanders in mock draft

The Washington Commanders have attacked the offseason with a sense of urgency after finishing the 2025 season 5-12. Washington’s biggest free agency move was signing Odafe Oweh, adding some juice to their defensive line. The Commanders land another elite defensive player in one recent mock draft.

ESPN’s Peter Schrager released a new mock draft on Tuesday ahead of the big event later this month. Schrager gave the Commanders linebacker Sonny Styles, who fell all the way to the seventh overall pick.

“I believe Washington is going to go defense; it gave up 6.0 yards per play in 2025, tied for third worst,” Schrager wrote. “Styles shows a lot of the same traits that Fred Warner has displayed in San Francisco, and GM Adam Peters — who came from San Francisco — knows what Warner has meant for the 49ers all these years. Styles had 77 tackles as a sideline-to-sideline defender last season and then lit up the combine with a smooth 4.46 in the 40-yard dash and a 43½-inch vertical jump. I like this fit.”

Styles could be an excellent fit with the Commanders, but it is unclear if he will fall out of the top five picks.

Styles is an elite athlete who has some incredible production at Ohio State. His pro comparison to Fred Warner is well earned, and Schrager is not the only one who thinks so. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein also listed Warner as his pro comparison for Styles.

Washington will enter the draft with Frankie Luvu and Leo Chenal as their projected starters at inside linebacker. Neither of them should prevent the Commanders from adding a blue-chip prospect like Styles.

If Styles actually is on the board at seventh overall, it is easy to imagine the Commanders sprinting their card in.
