Penguins’ Sidney Crosby left baffled by ‘circus’ that turned Game 3 vs. Flyers on its head

The second period of Game 3 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night has been the longest of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs so far — and it directly resulted in the Pens being put in a near insurmountable 0-3 hole in the Battle of Pennsylvania.

Following an initial fight early in the frame between Travis Konecny and Bryan Rust, which resulted in a 10-minute delay and 10 players receiving minor penalties, the Flyers went on to score three goals in a span of just six minutes in front of the home crowd at Xfinity Mobile Arena. They would go on to win the game 5-2.

“It kind of turned into a bit of a circus there,” Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby told reporters afterwards, per ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. “I’m not sure why they decided to put five guys in the box on each side. I felt like that kind of changed a lot of the momentum. It took a long time. Obviously, we didn’t get the kill. Felt like they fed off that.”

Although Konecny and Rust were the most involved, the referees gave every player on the ice a penalty.

“I didn’t do anything,” said Pens defenseman Erik Karlsson, who was one of the 10 in the box. “They just decided to take everybody who was on the ice, which I’ve never seen in my 17 years [in the NHL]. It’s unfortunate. It benefited them more than it benefited us. I don’t fully understand what just happened.”

That sequence was a massive turning point in the contest, and the Penguins now have no more margin for error staring down a deficit that only four teams in National Hockey League history have come back from.

The Battle of Pennsylvania has certainly lived up to its name in terms of hostility, but it’s been a one-sided series for the most part. Pittsburgh has scored just four times through two tilts, and have lost by at least two goals in all three games.

The Flyers deserve a lot of credit for how they’ve played, but the fourth win is always the hardest. It’ll be interesting to see if the Penguins can find a way to send the series back to Pittsburgh in Game 4 on Saturday.
