Patrick Mahomes puts NFL on notice in Chiefs’ risky $450m gamble tied to Travis Kelce’s future

With two letters and one number, the Kansas City Chiefs said it all.

One of the best quarterbacks in history was already back on the field — and Patrick Mahomes was ahead of everyone else’s schedule.

NFL fans stunned to see Mahomes back in action

“Comeback Player of the Year in the works,” one fan tweeted.

“Let’s call him the Bionic Man — just amazing,” a second fan posted.

“So happy to see you out there,” a third fan wrote.

Mahomes woke up on Tuesday morning with the Chiefs’ Week 1 countdown clock at 112 days and ticking.

If the three-time Super Bowl champion takes the first snap for Kansas City’s 2026 season, then beats the defending AFC West champion Denver Broncos on September 14 at Arrowhead Stadium, Mahomes’ modern legacy will grow even larger.

“QB1,” tweeted the Chiefs, attaching an alarm clock emoji to a post that was viewed more than 4 million times in less than 12 hours.

“QB1 looking solid already,” a fan tweeted. “Mahomes got that bounce back quick. (Going to) be fun watching him cook this season.”

Travis Kelce wouldn’t have returned for one more season in Chiefs red without a full belief that his longtime on- and off-the-field partner can lead Kansas City back to the playoffs in 2026.

Chiefs moving past 2025 nightmare

Last year was a nightmare for Andy Reid, Mahomes, Kelce and the Chiefs’ dynasty.

While once-discarded Sam Darnold won the Super Bowl with the defensive-driven Seattle Seahawks and Drake Maye replaced Tom Brady in New England, Kansas City suffered through a 6-11 campaign that ended with six consecutive losses.

Mahomes was lost to season-ending ACL and LCL injuries in his left knee, then Big Red was forced to finish the Chiefs’ worst year since 2012 with Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun splitting time at QB.

“Nobody wants a season like this,” said Reid, after Kansas City’s year ended with a 14-12 defeat to the division rival Las Vegas Raiders.

“But they’re obstacles. They come into play and you’ve got to work through those. There’s a learning curve here that you can set with some of the experiences we had for all of us and then never do it again, right?”

As soon as Mahomes went down, the biggest question in the NFL became when would famous No. 15 return.

Will Mahomes be ready for Week 1?

He’s the Grim Reaper who brought Showtime to the National Football League.

And even while Mahomes hasn’t been the best QB in the league in recent years, he’s already a Pro Football Hall of Fame lock at 30 years old and just beginning the second stage of his career.

“I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctors said I could,” Mahomes said in January.

“But I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. That’s the goal, to play Week 1 and have no restrictions. You want to be out there healthy and give us the best chance to win. I hope to do some things in OTAs and training camp and be able to do things there.”

Will the Chiefs win another Super Bowl with Mahomes as their franchise superstar?

Will he be able to play from Week 1 through Week 18 this season with the Seahawks, Bills, Chargers, Bengals, Patriots, 49ers and more waiting on the schedule?

Kansas City needs its QB1 all season for Super Bowl return

The post-Brady face of the NFL will face test after test in 2026, echoing all the early challenges he faced during his career after trading baseball for football and watching veteran QB Alex Smith lead Reid’s offense.

No. 15 for the Chiefs wore a protected, yellow jersey on Monday, then turned backward and fired a football forward.

NFL's Greatest......

Ranking the top 10......

Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?

Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?

Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and more

Tight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?

Kelce is back for one more year, Mahomes is healing and Big Red knows that 6-11 must be flipped upside down in Kansas City.

OTAs are mostly meaningless in the NFL.

For the Chiefs, calling Mahomes ‘QB1’ and tweeting out a video of the $450 million man practicing in a leg brace meant everything.
