Patrick Bailey, Stephen Vogt’s immediate reactions to Guardians-Giants trade

The Cleveland Guardians acquired catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. After the trade, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle shared immediate reactions to the deal from Guardians manager Stephen Vogt as well as Bailey.

“I’m super grateful for the Giants organization giving me many opportunities to play this game and the incredible support from the fans for me and my family,” Bailey texted Slusser.

“We are beyond excited to get him,” Vogt said, via Slusser.

It seems as if Bailey will take over starting catching duties in Cleveland. Bo Naylor was the starting catcher, but the Guardians ultimately optioned him to Triple-A after the trade on Saturday. Meanwhile, veteran Austin Hedges will continue to serve as the backup catcher.

Bailey won back-to-back Gold Glove awards in 2024 and 2025. He is not hitting the ball well in 2026, but the catcher could bounce back with the fresh start in Cleveland. At the moment, he is hitting .146/.213/.183 across 30 games played.

Bailey is moving from a 15-23 Giants ball club to a 21-19 Guardians team. The National League West is a better overall division without question. The Giants are currently in last place in the NL West, while the Guardians lead the American League Central. Bailey will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for a postseason spot with Cleveland.

The Giants will certainly miss Bailey in San Francisco. He had many good moments with the team. Now, he is set for his next chapter in Cleveland with an exciting Guardians ball club.
