PSG firepower to win the day
Arsenal come into this Champions League decider on a high after celebrating their first Premier League title in 22 years last weekend.
Given the season they’d had, failing to win that trophy might have been the beginning of the end for this Gunners squad.
But having become champions of England for the first time in 22 years, it may liberate them going forward.
They did wobble somewhat coming into the home-straight, before recomposing themselves and facing Paris Saint-Germain is one major ask after a challenging few months of that overbearing mental hurdle.
It’s the leading scorers in this season’s Champions League facing the meanest defence. Arteta and Arsenal will want to make this an endurance test, keeping things tight.
Luis Enrique and his squad faced a similar proposition with Inter Milan 12 months ago and they bludgeoned the Italian giants 5-0.
Their attacking nous, via the front three of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, could simply overpower Arsenal’s excellent defence and their semi-final win over Bayern Munich is the standout form line.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have beaten Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting and Atletico Madrid en route to Hungary – the much easier pathway, having topped the group phase.
The Gunners will carry a set-piece threat that PSG must be wary of and are more than capable of piercing the Parisian backline.
However, the French champions can become the first back-to-back Champions League winners since Real Madrid won three in a row from 2015/16 onwards.
Kvaratskhelia can shine again
In Munich last year, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored PSG’s fourth goal in the rout of Inter and he’s fancied to score in his second Champions League final.
The 25-year-old Georgian is one of the most fearsome attackers in world football and his direct running will cause Arsenal major worries.
He scored in the quarters against Liverpool and fired a stunning double in the epic 5-4 first leg semi-final win over Bayern.
He also teed up Dembele for the crucial opener in Munich in the return game and has become the first player to score or assist in seven straight Champions League knockout games in one season.
Arsenal’s first-choice right-back option, Jurrien Timber, is battling to be fit, but this would be a major ask for him having been out for nearly three months. Ben White also misses out and it could be an area that hurts the English champions.
Keeper an eye out for fouls
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was instrumental last season as PSG knocked out Arsenal in the semi-finals.
Russia international Matvei Safonov has taken over between the sticks for large parts of the season after the Italian headed to Manchester City. Which may end up being PSG’s weak point.
He’s sure to come under bombardment from Arsenal’s set-piece playbook – at corners, free-kicks and throw-ins.
Safanov will have to contest some high balls and the 6/4 about a foul on either goalkeeper looks generous given the protection officials tend to offer on the shotstoppers when players collide under a high ball.
