Panthers’ GM gets brutally honest on Bryce Young extension talks

The Carolina Panthers recently picked up the fifth-year option on quarterback Bryce Young, locking him in through the 2027 season. But what about a long-term contract? Panthers general manager Dan Morgan is not rushing to the negotiation table just yet.

During a recent media appearance, Morgan delivered a brutally honest, yet optimistic, update regarding a potential extension for the former No. 1 overall draft pick.

“That’s something that here internally, you know we’ll keep talking through, we’ll be in touch with Bryce’s agent, we’ll figure it out at the right time,” Morgan said. “Right now I know Bryce is focused on getting better every single day. We obviously love him, he’s getting better year after year, becoming a great leader for us.”

Morgan added that while the front office feels excited about their franchise signal-caller, they prefer a patient approach. “When a contract happens, we’ll see about that, but we’re excited about him.”

Young’s NFL journey resembles a rollercoaster. After surviving a chaotic rookie campaign and a brief benching early in 2024, the quarterback bounced back in a major way last year. He guided Carolina to an NFC South division title and a playoff berth, proving he possesses the resilience to thrive professionally.

However, his uneven performance in the postseason left obvious room for growth. During Carolina’s wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Young struggled against a fierce defensive front. He finished that game completing 21 of 40 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Those numbers highlight why Morgan wants to see consistency before handing out a fully guaranteed payday. Young undeniably turned a corner last season, mastering the offensive scheme while significantly elevating the surrounding talent. Now, he simply needs to string together a complete, wire-to-wire dominant campaign.

If he takes that next step in 2026, Carolina will happily write the big check.7
