Ousmane Dembele obliterates Lamine Yamal record as Ballon d’Or battle continues

Ousmane Dembele is the red-hot favourite to win the Ballon d’Or after his goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League win.

So, it’s no surprise one of his shirts from the final has just smashed records after going up for auction on MatchWornShirt.

What was the previous record?

Previously, Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, a fellow Ballon d’Or contender, held the record for the most expensive football shirt sale on MatchWornShirt.

His jersey from their 7-2 Champions League win over Newcastle United went for £65,359 at the end of May.

Signed by Yamal himself, the shirt features special typography created by Anna Vives as part of a collaboration between the club and Fundació Itinerarium for International Down Syndrome Day.

However, Dembele and three PSG teammates have now usurped the Spanish youngster.

What record did Dembele set?

Dembele’s shirt from the win over Arsenal, on penalties, went for a final total of £138,036 to a bidder from the United States.

And bidders from the US also went crazy for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, and Marquinhos.

All three also beat Yamal’s previous record with Kvaratskhelia’s going for £131,147, Doue’s fetching £113,316, and Brazil legend Marquinhos collecting £112,563.

In total, PSG players saw their shirts sold for a combined £642,775 with just over £100,000 of that being bid in the final hour.

There were 255 bids from 47 countries, showing the global appeal of the French giants and their superstars.

Tijmen Zonderwijk, CEO of MWS, said: “This incredible auction typifies why fans and collectors around the world have a deep love of sports memorabilia; it celebrates the iconic moment of PSG winning the UEFA Champions League for a second consecutive season, and it gives collectors the chance to own the moments of history generated by the game and the incredible players who made it so special.”

And the shirt could become even more valuable should Dembele win the World Cup this summer and then claim the Ballon d’Or ahead of Yamal.

One record left to beat

However, Dembele’s shirt isn’t the most expensive product ever sold by MatchWornShirt.

That record is still held by Dutch Olympic speed skater Jutta Leerdam.

Jake Paul’s fiance broke it in March, when it was held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Her signed suit from the Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina sold for £175,913.

She wore it when she claimed gold and an Olympic record in the 1,000m – her first title at that level.
