Orioles get big Samuel Basallo injury update amid shoulder recovery

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo is currently recovering from right shoulder inflammation. The Orioles are hoping to have the catcher return sooner rather than later. Basallo is now officially the team’s catcher of the future after the Orioles traded Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox before the MLB trade deadline. According to MLB.com, Basallo is taking steps forward toward returning, but his expected return is still “TBD” at the moment.

“Resumed throwing Aug. 7, throwing on back-to-back days from 90 feet. Hit off tee on both Aug. 9 and 10, the latter session occurring at Target Field in Minneapolis,” MLB.com reported Monday.

Basallo has hit .241/.305/.450 across 86 games played during the 2026 campaign. He has 16 home runs and nine doubles as well. His power numbers are quite impressive for a catcher.

At just 21 years old, Basallo’s ceiling remains extremely high. The Orioles believe he can be a star for years to come.

They are only three games back of an AL Wild Card spot, though. The American League has been underwhelming all season, and the Orioles are still technically in postseason contention.
