Oregon lands massive IOL over UCLA, SMU

Oregon football added new muscle in the trenches with edge rusher Josh Christensen five days ago. The Ducks boosted the opposite side Wednesday. Landing this massive offensive lineman over Big Ten rival UCLA and SMU via the College Football Recruiting trail.

Three-star from Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, California Lex Mailangi chose Oregon, confirming his decision with Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals. Mailangi brings an imposing 6-foot-4, 340-pound frame to Eugene plus brute force as a run blocker.

The interior offensive lineman took on some of the nation’s best defensive linemen in both the Trinity League and non-league slate. Even tangling with out-of-state opponents hailing from Florida. Mailangi cemented his case as one of the leading top recruits from the Monarchs line in becoming a key road clearer after handoffs. His play clearly won over coach Dan Lanning and offensive line coach A’lique Terry.

So how did Oregon win him over? Mailangi revealed why via Max Torres of On3/Rivals, including taking a closet dig at the SEC.

“I want to play at the highest level. And I believe the Big 10 right now is pretty much as big as you can get with them surpassing the SEC,” he said.

That’s not the only reason why he chose the Ducks.

“I want to develop into NFL player, that’s my dream. I think Oregon has the resources and coaching to help me get there,” he said.

Eugene indeed is a popular destination to land on pre-draft radars. Especially via the offensive line with tackles Josh Conerly and Penei Sewell representing first round tackle talents. But Jackson Powers-Johnson represents a high draft choice as an interior offensive lineman.

Oregon delivered some big recruiting wins in June starting with four-star linebacker Toa Satele.
