Oilers sign top goaltending prospect to one-year contract
The Edmonton Oilers on Thursday signed goaltender Connor Ungar to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2026-27 season with an AAV of $850,000. The 24-year-old netminder, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 205 pounds, will remain within Edmonton’s organizational goaltending pipeline.
In 2025-26, Ungar split time across ECHL and AHL affiliates. With Greensboro, he went 2-1-1 in four games with a 1.42 GAA and .945 SV% and a shutout vs Tahoe. In two starts for Fort Wayne, he recorded a 1.44 GAA and .944 SV%, winning both. With Orlando, he played 19 games (7-8-3, 2.66 GAA, .913 SV%), highlighted by a 37-save shutout in his debut at Savannah and two shutouts during the stint. With Bakersfield, he made 13 starts, finishing 9-2-2 with a 2.51 GAA and .923 SV%, adding a 25-save shutout against Ontario and wins in his first six AHL starts.
Ungar’s pro career began with Fort Wayne in the ECHL, where he compiled a 19-12-4 record in 35 games with a 2.74 GAA and .903 SV%, along with three shutouts. Before turning professional, he played in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Red Deer Rebels, and Brandon Wheat Kings, finishing the 2022-23 season with a 26-7-0 record in 38 games, a 2.58 GAA and .925 SV%, and a run to the WHL Conference Semifinals, where Moose Jaw lost to the Winnipeg Ice in six games. He also spent a season at Brock University, earning rookie and goaltender of the year honors.
The Oilers’ goaltending depth also includes Samuel Jonsson, who made his North American debut with Fort Wayne, 21-year-old Nathaniel Day after his first full pro season with the Komets, and prospects Eemil Vinni in Finland’s Mestis and Daniel Salonen in the Liiga. Ungar’s 13 AHL appearances with Bakersfield and 9-2-2 record position him for a larger role with the Condors next season.
