The Three Lions have now reached the quarter-finals at five consecutive major tournaments, including each of the last three World Cups. Norway, meanwhile, have made history by advancing to the final eight for the first time.

Thomas Tuchel’s men head into the contest in outstanding form, having won 15 of their last 16 competitive matches. Four of those victories have come during this summer’s tournament, further strengthening England’s status as one of the leading contenders to lift the trophy.

England finished top of Group L with seven points after beginning their campaign with a 4-2 triumph over 2018 runners-up and 2022 third-place finishers Croatia. A goalless draw against Ghana followed before they secured top spot with a convincing 2-0 victory over Panama.

Their round-of-32 clash with DR Congo proved far more difficult. England appeared destined for a surprise exit before captain Harry Kane produced two late goals inside the final 15 minutes to complete a dramatic comeback and book their place in the next round.

The Three Lions then overcame arguably their sternest examination of the tournament so far against co-hosts Mexico in the last 16. Roared on by more than 80,000 home supporters in the challenging conditions of high-altitude Mexico City, England were forced to play the entire second half with 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card but still produced a superb display to claim an entertaining 3-2 victory.

England’s previous World Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals when they suffered a 2-1 defeat to eventual finalists France in Qatar. The reigning champions went on to reach the final before losing their crown in a penalty shootout.

Norway, meanwhile, are preparing for the biggest World Cup fixture in the country’s history as they make their first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals.

The Scandinavian nation had failed to progress beyond the last 16 in each of their previous three World Cup appearances, the most recent of which came back in 1998.

Ståle Solbakken’s side have impressed on their return to the global stage, winning four of their opening five matches. Victories over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2) in their opening two Group I fixtures secured qualification for the knockout rounds with a game remaining.

Following a heavily rotated side in a 4-1 defeat to France in their final group match, Norway recalled their first-choice XI for the knockout stages and quickly regained their winning form. Narrow 2-1 successes over Ivory Coast in the round of 32 and five-time champions Brazil in the last 16 earned them a historic quarter-final meeting with England.

The head-to-head record points firmly in England’s favour. Norway have managed just two victories in 12 previous meetings between the nations, with their last success coming in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo in 1993.

England have also prevented Norway from scoring in each of the last four meetings. The Three Lions have won both encounters since 2000, most recently recording a 1-0 friendly victory at Wembley in 2014 thanks to a Wayne Rooney penalty.
