Norway fans rub salt in wounds as ‘terrible’ $3.5bn MLB franchise enters tank mode – ‘Depths of despair’
Things couldn’t be much worse for the New York Mets.
The Mets are on the brink of losing the series to the Chicago Cubs and in no danger of sparking a parade like the Knicks.
On Wednesday, they were swept on in two games that made their fans, and their announcer loose their minds.
Despite their $365 million payroll, second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets stand at 34-46, bottom of the National League East.
Norway fans unknowingly troll Mets with hilarious reaction to home run
In the sixth inning of the first game of the doubleheader, Dansby Swanson hit a go-ahead three-run home run, shattering fans’ hearts, but not for one section of Citi Field.
After beating Senegal 3-2 at the ‘hideous MetLife Stadium’, Norway supporters found their way to the home of the Mets.
As Swanson’s home run, hit the seats, the broadcast panned to their section and found them doing the conga line, along with Mrs Met.
The fans hung around for the second game of the doubleheader, arguably the worse one from a local perspective.
New York committed six errors on their way to a 10-5 loss.
When first-baseman Mark Vientos made the sixth-and-final error in the eighth inning, Mets announcer Gary Cohen lost his mind.
“Terrible, I mean, what do you say at this point?” Cohen said, via Awful Announcing.
“I mean, this team is in the depths of despair, can’t get starting pitching to hold the other team at bay.
“Struggling with their offense, and now the defense falls apart. SIX infield errors. Unprecedented.
“This is the kind of game that causes re-evaluations. You can profess all you want about being confident in the team you have, but this has been nothing short of ugly.”
Mets make first move of many ahead of trade deadline
The Mets entered 2026 with high hopes, but a 12-game losing streak early on had many calling for manager Carlos Mendoza’s head.
They have shown glimpses at various points, but when everything seems to be going well, either injuries – like Clay Holmes breaking his leg, or mental mistakes have crept in.
In a clear and obvious signal of intent ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, president of baseball operations David Stearns has begun the teardown.
The Mets sent starting pitcher David Peterson to the Cubs in exchange for infield prospect Cole Mathis.
Peterson had struggled for New York in 2026, posting a 6.09 ERA in 16 appearances, just a year after his first All-Star Game nod.
With the team sitting a staggering 12 games under .500 as July approaches, Peterson is almost certainly just the first domino to fall in what projects to be a massive fire sale.
For a fan base that entered the year dreaming of a deep October run under Mendoza, watching a section of oblivious, conga-lining international soccer fans celebrate their downfall was the ultimate salt in the wound.
