‘No other way’ – Andy Reid assigns blame for Cowboys loss while hitting back at suspect officiating decisions

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a massive blow to their playoff hopes following their 31-28 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.

The two teams delivered a blockbuster game as Dak Prescott outshone Patrick Mahomes to boost the Cowboys’ playoff hopes and leave the Chiefs’ postseason ambitions hanging by a thread.

Prescott completed 27 passes out of 39 for 320 yards with two touchdowns as Dallas improved their record to 6-5-1.

It was a rough road loss for the Chiefs, who were edged out in another one-score defeat just days after belief they had turned a corner after their crucial win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

The Chiefs started the game against Dallas with an offensive blitz, forcing a turnover, while Mahomes led back-to-back scoring drives.

However, in the end, their defense let them down, and Prescott overcame an early wobble to lead Dallas to a massive victory.

Andy Reid takes accountability for Cowboys defeat

With the Chiefs potentially missing the postseason for the first time in a decade, the pressure is on head coach Andy Reid, who was quick to assign responsibility to both himself and his coaches.

“The guys understand we’ve got to clean up a few things, and, you know, we’re going do better as coaches,” he said.

“We’ve got to do better as players. And so, you go back to the drawing board and you keep working, is what you do.

“We were close here. But we had too many opportunities that we gave away, and with two good teams playing each other, you can’t have those things.”

When the Chiefs were on the verge of a fourth quarter comeback, penalties stung the team, with the side penalized 10 times for 119 yards in total.

Patrick Mahomes was superb despite the loss, and almost single-handedly pulled off another classic comeback.

But KC’s defense ultimately let him down and they were unable to slow down Dak Prescott and Dallas’ potent offense.

The Chiefs’ record is now 6-6 with their playoff hopes on life support, and Mahomes best said what they must do in their remaining games.

“We’re going to play a lot of good teams coming up,” Mahomes said.

“If we’re going to make the playoffs, we’re going to have to win them all. That’s got to be the mindset when we step into the [training facility] when we get back.”

This included multiple holds and big defensive pass interference calls.

Both teams were heavily penalized during the game but the Chiefs seemed to come off worst.

“The officiating has been very very one sided for Dallas so far,” former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky posted on X.

On the final drive of the game, Cowboys receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens both drew suspect pass interference calls.

“We weren’t just playing the Cowboys tonight,” a Chiefs fan wrote on X. “We were playing the refs too. Hands down.”

And it’s safe to say Reid didn’t agree with some of the calls being made by the officials, clapping back while admitting their’s is the final decision.

“It’s not the way I saw it, but it’s the way they saw it; the officials saw it. So they made the calls. But you’ve got to stay aggressive against those guys. No other way to do it,” he added.

Mahomes let down by teammates

It’s safe to say Mahomes had a performance worthy of a win.

He completed 23 of 34 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Thursday’s Thanksgiving clash was the first game since he became a starter that the Chiefs lost a game in which he threw four touchdowns and had no interceptions.

The superstar signal caller didn’t hold back when talking about the current state of the Chiefs, who can seemingly lose to any team right now.

“We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody,” Mahomes said.

“We’ve got to be more consistent. We’ve had big plays and we’ve had runs where we can really score at any time, but we’ve got to be consistent for four quarters, especially when you play good teams and they have a good offense.”

The Chiefs’ chances of clinching a postseason berth dropped from 63 percent to 47 percent with their defeat.

And the remaining five games, starting with the Houston Texans on December 7, are all against AFC opponents.

The Chiefs’ margin for error between now and the end of the regular season is officially razor thin.
