Nikolaj Ehlers wins Game 2 vs. Canadiens for Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes responded to their disappointing Game 1 loss in the Eastern Conference Final with a dramatic victory, making sure they would not travel to Montreal facing a daunting two-game series deficit.

Hurricanes forward Nikolaj Ehlers scored a pair of goals on Saturday night, including the dramatic overtime winner early in the extra frame, helping Carolina secure an exciting 3-2 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens and even the series at one game each.

Ehlers beat Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes with a perfectly placed snap shot that sailed past his blocker and into the back of the net, sending the packed Lenovo Center crowd in Raleigh into a frenzy.

Just as they did in Game 1, the Hurricanes took an early lead, this time thanks to the second goal of the postseason from Eric Robinson. However, Montreal’s Josh Anderson would respond at 11:11 of the first period, tying the score at 1-1 with his fourth of the playoffs.

Ehlers restored the lead with his first goal of the game at the 17:03 mark of the second period. But with time becoming a factor for Montreal late in the third period, it was Anderson who capitalized on a goal-mouth scramble, stuffing the puck underneath goaltender Frederik Andersen and into the net, tying the game.

Ultimately, Montreal managed only 12 total shots on Andersen, who stopped 10 of them. Meanwhile, Dobes finished with 23 saves on the 26 shots that the Hurricanes fired his way.

The series now shifts to Montreal’s Bell Centre, where Game 3 will be played on Monday evening beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
