NFL rumors: Steelers expert dumps cold water on Baker Mayfield speculation amid Buccaneers questions

The Pittsburgh Steelers know they have one more season of Aaron Rodgers, as the veteran quarterback noted that he would be retiring. For a team that has had questions at the position for the past few years, they’ll have more at the end of the season, even though they have Will Howard and Drew Allar on the roster.

Some people are already thinking about other options, and one name that has come up is Baker Mayfield. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is in the final year of his contract, and he recently shared that he and the team are not close to an extension.

That gave Steelers fans enough hope to think that he could sign with them next offseason, but Curt Popejoy of Steelers Wire is pumping the brakes on that speculation.

“But before anyone gets too excited about Mayfield coming to the Steelers, just understand this isn’t feasible,” Popejoy wrote. “Not even a little bit. Mayfield is currently playing on a three-year, $100 million contract and we assume he’s going to want a raise in his next deal. Meanwhile, the Steelers have completely depleted their salary cap on huge contracts all over the field. Pittsburgh is going to be strapped for cash and will be forced to play a young quarterback next season at minimum.”

The Steelers have allocated money to several players on their team, which means they won’t even have the money to give Mayfield what he wants. There’s no question that he’s going to ask for a good amount as well, especially when looking at how he’s been playing the past few seasons.

That means the Steelers will have to find another option to dream about for now, and the hope is that someone else becomes available that they could acquire. If not, they make me stuck with Howard and Allar.
